Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Kontagora Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State, like many other regions in Nigeria, faces significant challenges in achieving energy independence. These challenges are deeply rooted in geopolitical factors, including political instability, regional power dynamics, and limited investment in local energy infrastructure (Adamu & Bello, 2023). Despite efforts by both state and federal governments to improve energy access in the region, the LGA continues to rely heavily on external sources of energy, primarily from national grids and imports. This dependence on external sources has implications for energy security, economic growth, and overall development in the area.
Geopolitical factors such as local political conflicts, competition for resources, and regional energy policies have complicated efforts to achieve energy independence. This study seeks to examine how these geopolitical factors impact energy independence in Kontagora LGA, exploring both the structural barriers and opportunities for improving energy self-sufficiency in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Kontagora LGA continues to experience challenges in achieving energy independence due to geopolitical factors such as political instability, insufficient local infrastructure, and regional conflicts over energy resources. These factors have resulted in energy shortages, unreliable power supply, and limited access to clean energy. The study aims to investigate these factors and propose strategies to overcome them, fostering energy independence in the region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it sheds light on the intersection of geopolitical factors and energy development in Kontagora LGA. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for policymakers, energy providers, and local authorities who seek to improve energy security and independence in the region.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Kontagora LGA, Niger State, and explore the geopolitical factors affecting energy independence. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining data on local energy infrastructure and political dynamics, as well as the difficulty in isolating external geopolitical influences.
